No injuries were reported after students at the University of Toronto’s Mississauga campus were told to shelter in place late Monday as police responded to a student housing complex.
The school said on social media that emergency responders were called to the scene at McLuhan Court residence, a building that typically houses first-year students.
Students were told to shelter in place as police continued their work.
The Peel Regional Police force said on social media there had been no reports of physical injuries and that the situation was “contained.”
On social media, the force described the matter as a dangerous weapons call.
In an email, a police spokesperson said the immediate area was evacuated.
“The incident is isolated and contained to a single residential unit,” the spokesperson said.
“Members of the public are being asked to avoid the area.”
A spokesperson for Peel Regional Paramedic Services said police had asked them to stage nearby and that they had not taken any patients.
On its website, the university says McLuhan Court provides beds to hundreds of first-year students.
