A small plane made an emergency landing on Highway 1 between Banff and Lake Louise Tuesday afternoon.
CBC News received video of the incident from American tourist Elaine Gulock, who filmed it from her vehicle while travelling with her husband. It shows a small propeller plane landing on the opposite side of the highway from them.
David and Elaine Gulock were driving back to Banff after finishing a hike at Lake Louise when they saw a plane come from around the mountains and fly toward them.
“It looked like it was just going to dive right into the ground. He was coming down at such a steep angle,” said David.
Afraid that the plane might crash into their car, the Gulocks pulled over onto the shoulder of the highway.
But the plane managed to level off and land safely on the other side of the highway.
The Gulocks say seeing a plane land on the highway wasn’t on their bingo card for their trip to Banff.
“The only thing we haven’t got to see so far is a bear. We’ve seen moose way up close and elk. But an airplane wasn’t on our list of things to try to see,” said Elaine.
No injuries or damage
Parks Canada and the Transportation Safety Board of Canada (TSB) confirmed they are aware of the incident.
The TSB says no injuries were reported, and there was no damage to the plane. It says it appears the plane experienced an engine or power issue before landing.
The agency plans to speak with the pilot, but says it will not be sending an investigator to the scene.
