Montreal mayor’s wish list for next Quebec government
Montreal Mayor Soraya Martinez Ferrada outlined her expectations for the next Quebec government at a news conference on Wednesday.
Her requests focus on three key points: homelessness and housing, infrastructure and mobility, and public safety.
She called on the next government to allocate recurring funding for 3,200 emergency shelter spots and to create three centres specializing in mental health and addiction by the summer of 2027.
She reiterated her calls for a REM light-rail train system in the eastern part of the city.
She also called for more funding to help with policing and youth violence prevention.
Last week, Martinez Ferrada announced that she was moving forward with her plan to gradually equip the city’s police officers with body cameras.
She also demanded that Quebec change its approach toward Montreal and that the city be consulted before any decision affecting it is made.
