A daycare worker and five children were struck by a driver while on their daily walk in Oshawa Wednesday morning, Durham police say.

Investigators told CBC Toronto in an email that officers were called to the area of Ryerson Crescent and Sheridan Street at around 9:25 a.m. for reports of a collision.

A two-year-old girl with serious, life-threatening injuries was rushed to a Toronto-area trauma centre by an Air Ornge helicopter, according to Sgt. Nicholas Gluckstein at a news conference from the scene.

The other four children were transported to a local hospital with minor injuries, police said. The youngest child is seven months old, and the oldest is three years old, Gluckstein said.

An adult, female daycare worker was also taken to hospital with serious but non-life-threatening injuries, according to police.

Gluckstein said the driver remained on scene and cooperated with police, before also being transferred to a local hospital with minor injuries.

Police say the vehicle was making a left turn when it struck the daycare worker and the children, who were all walking northbound across the street, according to Gluckstein.

There was no stop sign at that location, he added.

The intersection of Ryerson Crescent and Sheridan Street will be closed for investigation, Durham police said in a post on the social media site X.
