What do students want to hear from leaders?
Hi, I’m Rachel Watts, a CBC journalist based in Quebec City covering the election.
CBC asked Concordia University students what they want to hear from Quebec’s party leaders ahead of the debate. Several people pointed to affordability, housing, schooling and funding cuts.
Ingrid De La Torre says she wants to hear about how leaders would tackle the housing crisis and rising rent, “just for people [of] my generation to be able to move out of our parents and be able to live independently.”
Lefteri Manikis says there was a lot of discussion on sovereignty during the first televised debate, but affordability is top of mind for him this election — especially as a student.
“I feel like there’s a lot of empty promises and just a lot of stuff in the air, but nothing more concrete,” he said.
The cost of living is the “main issue” in Quebec, said Zineb Sarah Kassouri. But she hopes the environment is also discussed tonight, including “how they will reduce our gas emission cycles.”
“I feel like the topic of the environment always comes up in relation to economic development projects,” she added.
