U.S. President Donald Trump has escalated his trade war with Canada through outright bans on imports of certain Canadian goods.
The previously announced bans affect some alcoholic drinks, dairy byproducts and motorcycles, among other goods.
They came into force at 12:01 a.m. ET.
While the trade restrictions on Canadian goods are unlikely to significantly affect Canadian economic growth in the near term, they mark the latest fracture in Ottawa’s relationship with the Trump administration.
When asked about the bans Monday, Trump repeated his claim that Canada treats the United States badly but said he thinks there will be a trade deal in the coming weeks.
Canada-U.S. Trade Minister Dominic LeBlanc’s office said Monday its top priority remains “protecting and supporting Canadian workers, farmers, families and businesses from these unjustified actions.”
