Ottawa is hitting back at the United States, slapping hefty countertariffs on $27.6-billion worth of American products including metals, seafood, clothing, home appliances and electronic devices.
The retaliatory tariffs come days after President Donald Trump’s latest round of 50-per cent-tariffs on $28-billion of Canadian exports came into effect after a tentative trade deal collapsed less than an hour before Friday’s deadline.
Canadian Finance Minister François-Philippe Champagne said the trade terms proposed by the U.S. were unfair and unacceptable. He then said the new U.S. tariffs will have real consequences for Canadian workers and businesses across the country.
Canada’s dollar-for-dollar tariffs will start on Sept. 8.
