The Globe and Mail’s foundational dedication to journalistic excellence has always gone beyond our daily headlines. We have a longstanding commitment to nurturing and developing the next generation of reporters, editors and visual storytellers, to lend our institutional knowledge to help prepare young journalists to carry on the vital work of informing, engaging and inspiring Canadians. These objectives are embodied in The Globe’s Academic Internship Program.
Each spring, the program invites Canadian postsecondary students to spend five weeks working and learning at The Globe, either in our Toronto newsroom or our bureaus across the country, in a variety of roles that make up a modern news operation. The students work with our editors and receive coaching and mentorship to help them improve and grow as young journalists, in a challenging environment that teaches them the importance of high journalistic standards and practices.
We are looking for the brightest and most talented student journalists, regardless of their field of study. This includes students in journalism and media programs who require work experience in order to receive their degree, as well as students in other disciplines who require work terms in their programs, including co-op students. In all cases, we require that applicants have relevant experience working in journalism, either inside or outside your degree program.
Interested? If you are in a journalism/media studies program, talk with your program’s internship coordinator. If you are a student journalist in another academic program that offers work placements, contact our internship committee co-chairs, David Parkinson (DParkinson@globeandmail.com) and Madeleine White (MWhite@globeandmail.com), to learn next steps. Application deadline is Friday, Nov. 6, 2026.
