Welcome to National Defence: Mapping Canada’s growth strategy, a Globe and Mail event on Oct. 14 in Ottawa that brings together defence leaders, policy makers and industry experts for an afternoon of discussions and networking.
Federal plans to increase defence spending to 5 per cent of GDP by 2035 could translate into as much as $150-billion in annual investment. Beyond funding, delivering on this ambition will require speed, capacity, global partnerships and procurement strategies. During this pivotal moment for Canada, speakers will discuss the actions needed to scale capabilities, accelerate delivery and support Canada’s safety and security.
On Oct. 14, editor-in-chief David Walmsley will deliver opening remarks ahead of a series of speakers. The schedule includes a fireside chat with Ottawa bureau chief Mercedes Stephenson and Mélanie Joly, Minister of Industry and Minister responsible for Canada Economic Development for Quebec Regions, as they discuss Ottawa’s strategy to build a stronger defence industrial base.
And then national defence journalist Gavin John will interview Lieutenant-General M.C. Wright, Commander of the Canadian Army, on what we can learn from modern conflict, defending Canada’s North and how the army is preparing for a more dangerous world.
For those who can’t attend in person, we’re livestreaming the event starting at 1:30 p.m. ET.
