A Washington State woman accused of conspiring with the Tumbler Ridge shooter to carry out one of the worst school shooting attacks in Canadian history will remain in custody pending further court appearances.

James Cody Bryant, 30, of Bellingham, appeared in U.S. District Court in Seattle on Tuesday, wearing a beige button-down t-shirt over her slight frame with glasses and long hair that reaches to her waist. Ms. Bryant goes by Melody and uses she/her pronouns, according to her lawyers.

She faces charges of conspiring with and aiding Tumbler Ridge shooter Jesse Vanrootselaar, 18, in carrying out a mass shooting at a school in the northern B.C. mining town in February.

In issuing her ruling that Ms. Bryant should be detained, U.S. District Court Judge Mary Alice Theiler said she was not able to see any combination of release conditions that could satisfy the risks Ms. Bryant might post to herself or to the community, or the risk that she might fail to appear for future court dates.

Throughout the afternoon’s arguments, Ms. Bryant sat flanked by two U.S. Marshals. She remained still and made little visible reactions. At one point she appeared to use a tissue to wipe away tears.
