The suspect in Sunday’s shooting at a small synagogue in Belleville, Ont., has died.
Kristy Denette, a spokesperson for the province’s Special Investigations Unit, confirmed Tuesday that the suspect died Monday night.
The man had been identified by police as Sean Ward, 29, of Quinte West.
The SIU handles cases involving Ontario police that result in death or serious injury.
A post-mortem is scheduled to take place in Kingston on Wednesday, Ms. Denette said.
The suspect had allegedly opened fire with a shotgun on a police officer stationed outside the the Sons of Jacob synagogue as worshippers gathered to mark Yom Kippur, the holiest day on the Jewish calendar.
The officer, Constable Jeff Smith of the Belleville Police Service, remains hospitalized in stable condition in Kingston.
Lauren Wilkinson, a spokesperson for the Belleville Police Service, referred questions about Mr. Ward’s death to the SIU.
